As I was digging through the catacombs on my website, I found a blog that I had written 3 years ago that is so timely today, that I am reposting it. I, myself, was mesmerized by the included link from Marianne Williamson’s book, From Tears to Triumph. Three years ago I posted that if she ever ran for president, I would vote for her. I thought I was just being facetious and trying to make a point. How ironic, that today, she is running for president! This post is not political – just ironical. But, if nothing else, scroll down and click on the link for the thought-provoking quotes from Marianne’s book with sublime music.
In last week’s blog I talked about the ABC’s of easing grief. The letter “E” was Exercise. “Even if it is a walk to the corner. Take care of your body. You will need your stamina.” And the letter “N” was Nourish. “Nourish your body, mind, and soul. Eat healthy food, sleep, and pray.” The title of the series has been “We Don’t Di.” This week it is…We Don’t DiET!
Taking care of our health is important every day and not just when we are grieving. See if my tips below resonate with you.
- I am right handed, but eat with my left so I eat slower and eat less.
- I set my fork or chop sticks down between bites.
- I chew my food slowly and well. Sometimes I even count!
- I eat from fanciful colored plates. (Research shows people eat up to 30% more from white plates. Red is best to eat less.) I even drink water or my fizz drink* from elegant crystal glasses.
- Going to eat a bit? Sit! Did you know that you are apt to eat 5 times more while standing or walking?!
- I never eat or drink out of the bag, box, or bottle . Everything goes into a bowl, on a plate, or in a glass – and then I SIT!
- I used to hold my food (usually a brownie) in my hand and ask myself, “Will this take me closer to or further away from my goal?” Generally, I put it back down.
- I brush my teeth immediately after I eat anything. (I carry a travel toothbrush with me at all times.) That little taste of sweet in the toothpaste has been the main practice that has help keep my weight off for 40 years. I used to have an insatiable sweet tooth.
- I pray over my food before I eat.
- I store my food or leftovers (I love leftovers!) in containers that I can’t see through. If I have to open them – I pay closer attention. Out of sight, out of mind.
- I ALWAYS have something healthy to eat with me – usually a Granny Smith apple, some almonds, and an Arbonne Fit Chew*. If I get hungry; I have something healthy that I love.
- I savor every morsel by being mindful and concentrating on what I am eating. I don’t eat at my desk or while I’m driving.
- I think of my body and belly like an expensive sports car and gas tank.🏎 I only put high octane fuel in my car and never put too much in the tank so it over flows.
- I made a list of all the things I was grateful for down to my eyebrows and fingernails.
- I dropped everything and went for a 3-minute walk and focused on the birds and flowers or the rain. Sometimes I just walked around the office or to the ladies room.
- I played my favorite 3-minute upbeat song. (I used to love Helen Reddy’s, I Am Woman!)
- I meditated for 3 minutes and visualized myself feeling light and airy while I breathed in and out.
- I held a picture over my heart of the healthy person I longed to be.
- I offered a prayer of forgiveness to myself for getting in the state I was in.
- I kept little booklets and cards of positive sayings that I would flip through for 3 minutes to fortify myself.
- I looked at clothes catalogs of the styles I would buy when I reached my goal.
- I thanked God for giving me the courage and strength I needed to push past my fears and cravings.
- I played with my dog who loved me unconditionally.
- I called someone that I knew was lonely.
- I called my sister. She always made me laugh.
- I made plans to help someone in need.
- I said my affirmations over and over and over.
- I gently reminded myself that I had already decided to get healthy and that I always kept my word.
- I read articles about the evils of diet sodas and the things I craved that I knew were not good for me.

i love how you think about eating…I do have all white plates, but I eat all meals off the smaller salad plate. Use my red plates for fun. We don’t seem to snack anymore and many of our meals are much smaller. I think as we age, we eat less and drink more water. Walking is a great exercise!
Thank you for your continued encouragements and stories of your life.
